On my Workbench
Hi all. This week-end was quite productive, with a lot of 10mm miniatures painted in a row. But let see by yourself:
Salut à tous. Ce week-end a été productif, car j'ai peint pas mal de 10mm.
First, my camp for my burgundian army, from Pendraken. Still not finished (highlights and then dip).
Tout d'abord, mon camp pour mon armée bourguignonne. Ok, il est pas fini, mais vous en avez une idée:
Next, a painting order for a friend: Palmyrean cataphracts from Magister Militum. If you look closely, you can see 21 different cataphracts ^^
Ensuite, 21 cataphractes Magister Militum. C'est le début d'une commande pour un pote. Et, ils sont tous différents. Il me reste encore la lasure à passer.
And finally, the beginning of my future army, medieval Hungarian, from Kallistra. 16 Hungarian knights, again all different:
Et, pour terminer, l'embryon de ma future armée, des Hongrois médiévaux de chez Kallistra. Là encore, il sont tous différents ^^

[AAR] Pyrrhus à Clichy- dimanche
I had two battles fought on Sunday at the Clichy Tournament; the first against an Ostrogoth army, then against the might of Rome.
So, first battle: I thought my army was big (23 units). But my ennemies were many, many more (27 units). Ouch... How to destroy such a numerous army, full of impetous units, led by Alain Buffet, who like to destroy phalanxes and peltats... Fortunately for me, I had elefants.
Le dimanche, j'affronte Alain Buffet et sa masse d'Ostrogoths... tous impetueux ou presque. Argh. Et avec une démoralisation à 27! Re-Argh.
I a had a gully in the middle of my deployment zone, and, on his side, but on my left, two steep hills, not very practical for my troops... But maybe I should have passed trough them... The Ostrogoths are inthe center, many footmen, flanked by poor archers and impetous cavalry. They even have a cavalry reserve...
I decided to advance in a very compact way: my medium foot and elefants should go fast right at the throat of the left flank; my cavalry had to slow down the advance of the impetous footmen, while my phalanx, in deep order, could advance and strike at the right time...
Mon plan est simple: je joue concentré pour frapper où je le désire, avant quel'enfer ne me tombe dessus. Heureusement, une ravine dans ma zone de déploiement protègera un de mes flancs. Je décide d'envoyer ma cavalerie retarder l'avance de l'infanterie, tandis que mes fantassins moyens et mes éléphants vont aller massacrer le flanc gauche ennemi, riche en cavalerie iméptueuse et en archers médiocres... Ma phalange constitue ma seconde ligne.

Face à un début de manoeuvre de cavalerie ostrogoth, je décide d'étendre un morceau de la phalange, et ce sera largement suffisant!

Vive les fantassins élite et les éléphants! comme vous le voyez, il ne reste plus grand'chose du flanc adverse. Le général ostrogoth est forcé de faire donner la réserve... mais envoyer de nouveaux cavaliers contre des éléphants...
After rounds of fighting, my cavalry went away, routed, but the second wave is coming: the mighty phalnx striked, and although I had some losses, the ennemy infantry was outflanked, and began to give way...
Ma cavalerie finit par se retirer du combat, mais la phalange fait mieux que donner. Ok, j'ai des pertes, mais les Ostrogoths sont complètement tournés.
Aerial view of the battlefield. Despite all my efforts, I had too many losses. The Ostrogoths lost 30 points and routed, but I also lost (on the final round, dang) 23 points, and also routed. Well, a hard won draw, very tense but also very fun. I hate barbarians!
Je suis à deux doigts de la victoire, mais de la défaite aussi. Le dernier tour est décisif... Si, à l'issue des combats, l'armée ostrogoth déroute, c'est la même chose pour moi...
Last Game: I end up agaisnt an Early imperial Roman Army... Very well commanded...But, after some talking with the other players, I knew my opponent, Samuel Laroumagne, was a defensive one... That's a mistake: with a roman army, you have to be aaggressive, otherwise, you'll be outflanked! I planned my aggressive against him (niark niark).
Dernière partie du tournoi: j'affronte Samuel Laroumagne et ses Romains Haut Empire. Gros potentiel de commandement, mais... J'ai appris que c'était un joeur défensif... Je vais donc être très agressif pour l'empêcher d'utiliser le terrain à son avantage... Surtout qu'il se retrouve dans la plaine, alors que je vais avoir mon flanc protégé par une ravine, et deux champs face à ma zone de déploiement...
The Roman Army, forced to fight in the plains, is deployed, as if it were on the training grounds.
Each corps had legionaires. Their right had also some auxiliaries, the same on their left. In the center was the roman cavalry and 2 carroballistae (beh), two mobile heavy artillery...
Tous les corps possèdent des légionnaires (dont 2 élite). Des auxiliaires sont sur les flancs, la cavalerie en réserve, et 2 artilleries lourdes mobiles au centre, elles vont m'embêter par leurs tirs, mais elles ne réussiront pas à détruire mes formations.
My plan is simple: I have a gully on my right, and two field in the center, with a gap in the middle: So, my medium foot will advance, through the fields; my phalanx, in deep order, will go through the gap, at the double, to deny the Roman the possibility of manoeuvre. On my left, I choose a tricky option: I send all my cavalry on a flanking mouvement beside the field, to destroy the roman medium foot.
Je déploie mes infanteries moyennes dans les champs, pour foncer rapidement vers l'adversaire, tandis quela phalange va aller tout droit. Je décide également de tenter un mouvement tournant avec toute ma cavalerie, pour détruire ses troupes moyennes.

I have the initiative, so I rush forward, as fast as I can. On the back ground you can see my cavalry is almost on position to strike. But I know my medium foot on the right will be sacrified, because the Roman cavalry is moving towards them...
Comme j'obtiens l'initiative, je fonce droit devant. Je sais que je vais devoir sacrifier mon aile droite, qui va se retrouver à poil en plaine, avec une menace de cavalerie. Grâce à mes points de commandement, ma cavalerie est presque en position. Que fait-il? Pas grand'chose, à mon grand soulagement: il déploie son aile droite, et sa cavalerie, mais n'avance pas ses légionnaires dans la brèche entre les champs..; Grave erreur, il aurait pu m'empêcher de manoeuvrer...

Oui ce genre de situation peut se produire...
As predicted, the Roman army doesn't really move, excepted for the cavalry. So I place my units carefully, choosing the best opponent to have a maximum effect on the fight to come...
Et comme l'armée romaine bouge peu, j'ai le temps de déployer mes unités comme je l'entends: ma phalange face aux légionnaires, ma cavalerie face aux auxiliaires, et mes éléphants et fantassins moyens face aux légionnaires et auxilaires... Ok, je suis débordé par les cavaliers romains, mais....
And you see the result... Ok, my right flank is slowly routing... But in the center and the right... the roman army is in a really bad shape... And it's finally routing. Astounding victory for me, with only 14 points lost.
... Voilà le résultat: l'armée romaine en prend plein la tronche. Certes, mes fantassins moyens mangent de leur côté... mais je nettoie le centre et le flanc droit, m'assurant la victoire, malgré 14 points perdus.

That's all folks. It was a good week-end, and my pyrrhic army is very interesting. Tricky to use and master, but it can be very powerful...
Petite réflexion: l'armée Pyrrhus est vraiment sympa à jouer. Peu de tireurs certes, mais gros potentiel de choc et de manoeuvre. La phalange médiocre est une excellente unité, pas chère, et peut servir à tout, soit en ordre mince face à la cavalerie, soit en ordre profond, pour bénéficier d'un +2 salutaire. La liste permet des combinaisons intéressantes, pas toujours faciles à utiliser, mais qui sont très marrantes.
Bref, je conseille cette armée, mais pas pour des débutants. Il faut un peu d'expérience.

[AAR] Pyrrhus à Clichy- samedi/ Pyrrhus in Clichy
Last week-end I was in Clichy, attending an antic-medieval tournament, Art de la guerre. We were 12, everyone with an antic army. I played two games on saturday.
My first battle was against Michel Acloque and his Sassanid Army, full of elefants and cataphracts. Damn. the first game for my pyrrhic army and I must confront a very powerful army. anyway. I gain the intiative and i choose to fight in the mountains, with brushes and step hills... to try to amper down his mobility...
Pour ma première bataille à Clichy, je rencontre Michel Acloque et ses Sassanides, bourrés d'unités élite. J'essaie de truffer le terrain d'obstacles.
Tha Sassanids are on the left: The elefants and his poor infantry are on his left flank, the elite clibanari on the center, and the cataphracts on his right.
So, I choose to rush to his left flank with my infatry and elefants, and to refuse my left flank with the phalanxes.
il déploie ses éléphants indiens et son infanterie sur sa gauche (ce sera ma cible); ses cavalerie lourde arc élite au centre, et ses cataphractes sur son flanc droit.

I have the initiative and move first, right at his throat... with my medium foot. The Phalanx is forming up on my left, ready to counter the cavalry threat.
J'obtiens l'initiative et je fonce vers l'infanterie ennemie avec mes Bruttiens et mes éléphants, tandis que je refuse mon flanc gauche avec ma phalange médiocre.

Je me déploie pour flanquer le corps sassanide.
I'm in a very good position on his left... But my light cavalry won't be able to stop the mounted archers and clibanari...
Je maîtrise mal mon armée, et je laisse un trou se former: ma cavalerie légère sera incapable de tenir face à toute cette cavalerie adverse.
The cataphracts charge the phalanx. And I make a big mistake: My reserve cavalry, which was int he center, is sent on my left flank to attack the flanks of the cataphracts, leaving a forming gap in the center...
Michel lance ses charges; je tiens mais j'exploite très mal: j'ai une réserve de cavalerie mais je l'envoie du mauvais côté: j'aurais dû l'envoyer au centre...
Meanwhile, despite my superiority, I don't have the upper hand in the melee ...
Le pire est que malgré ma supériorité, je ne le détruis pas assez vite sur sa gauche. Résultat, défaite logique 23 points à 14. Snif.
So... How did my first game went? I managed to destroy 14 points of the Sassanid army (which demoralized at 20). But at the same time, the cataphracts destroyed a part of my phalanx, and his cavalry flanked my medium foot, because of my mistake, their flank was unprotected... So, it's a logical loss.
Second game: Christophe Molière and his Arménians, with a hun ally... Very cool guy, and very fun game.
Deuxième partie, je joue contre Christophe Molière et ses Arméniens: c'est un mec super sympa, on s'est bien amusé.
Pauvre Christophe, si tu savais ce qui t'attends...
Once again, I have the initiative. His cataphracts are on his right, the Huns in the center, and, between a steep hill and brush, his infantry, some catafracts and his baggage... They will be my goal, because my elefants and infantry LOVE to fight in the brushes ^^.
Le choix du terrain m'est encore favorable. Le terrain est compartimenté de son côté, avec une colline escarpée. De plus, sur mon flanc droit, deux broussailles. Chic. Et deuxième effet kiss-cool, il place ses bagages et son corps d'infanterie dans ce petit espace. Yes! Il est coincé, et je vais lancer mon infanterie et mes babars dessus. Ma phalange couvrira mon flanc gauche comme auparavant.
Once again, I rush towards the "weak" Armenian corps, while the phalanx is deploying to protect my left flank.
Cette fois-ci je ne fais l'erreur de laisser les piquiers loin derrière, et je maintiens systématiquement la pression, empêchant Christophe de manoeuvrer...

Il me balance quelques tirs, amis c'est insuffisant, et ma cavalerie veille à l'arrière en cas de trou...

Pendant ce temps, on s'étripe joyeusement... Et on s'envoie des mots fleuris...

Dois-je ajouter un commentaire? la supériorité a joué en ma faveur cette fois-ci.
As you can see, I pressed forward with my phalnx to avoid beeing outmanoeuvered; my cavalry stayed in the center to act as a reserve, which payed off: the result was a victory. The Armenians routed, and their catafracts never charged (phew). I lost 16 points from 23. It was a great game. i had a real feeling for my army.
Photo finale: ma phalange a bien avancé, empêchant les manoeuvres arméniennes, d'autant plus que leur commandement n'est pas terrible. Bref, belle victoire, mais à la Pyrrhus (normal) car j'ai perdu 16 points.

The army's philosphy/ conception de l'armée
I wanted a choc based army, to press forward and suppress the ennemy's abitlity to manoeuver. So I chose an army with good commanders, and fast infantry units.
Je voulais une armée basée sur le choc et la rapidité, pour empêcher l'adversaire de manoeuvrer.
- The first corps has
8 poor phalanxes, to refuse a flank against cavalry armies, or to get cheap but powerful units if in deep formations
2 elite impact cavalry and 1 medium cavalry, to act as a reserve.
1er corps:
8 phalanges médiocres, pour former une lognue ligne anti-cav, ou bien avoir de belles unités puissantes en ordre profond
2 cavaleries impact élite et 1 cavalerie moyenne, pour jouer en réserve
- The 2nd corps:
2 medium spearmen,
1 psiloi
1 elefant
2 light horses with javelin.
Its purpose is to act as a liaison between 1st and 3rd corps, and to add some melee power in case of need.
2e corps:
2 lanciers moyens
1 psiloi
1 éléphant
2 Lh avec javelot
C'est un corps de liaison entre le 1er et le 3e corps.
- 3rd corps:
2 medium elite infantry
2 medium infantry
1 psiloi
1 elefant
it's the "fast" attack corps, whose purpose is to rush towards the weak point of the ennemy, using terrain to do so. the elite units and the elefant also give some staying power in flat terrain.
3e corps:
2 MI élite
2 MI
1 psiloi
1 éléphant
C'est le corps d'attaque rapide, qui doit foncer sur le point faible adverse, en utilisant le terrain. Les élite et l'éléphant ont également suffisamment de puissance pour combattre en terrain découvert.

Clichy, Clichy... Est-ce que j'ai une tête de Clichy?
Today was the first day of the "Triomphe de l'Ile-de-France" a French gaming convention in Clichy. I'm in the Art de la Guerre tournament, with a pyrrhic army. For now, everything is fine (games, players, sellers...)
Salut les gars. Ce premier jour de tournoi de Clichy s'achève. Mon armée Pyrrhus s'est bien comportée, avec une petite défaite et une victoire... à la Pyrrhus. Moi je vous le dis, elle a du potentiel. Je ne vous en dis pas plus pour le moment, je me repose pour demain.

Et, au fait, l'ami Siaba est passé, et je lui ai offert un petit cadeau, le défi de la boule qui lui était dédié: on s'est bien marré à énumérer tout ce qui n'était pas codex^^

I hadn't shown you the final 3 units of my hellenistic army yesterday, for a good reason: there are too many spies, and I wanted to make a big surprise at the tournament today. So, while I'm gaming, you can now see the final 3 ( no, they're not cylons)...
Comment ça je suis pas fair-play? ok, il me restait 3 unités à vous montrer de mon armée hellénistique. Mais je voulais reserver la surprise à mes adversaires pour aujourd'hui. Du coup, vous les voyez en même temps qu'eux.
2 unités de lanciers moyens, et un second éléphant. Et ce que vous voyez en plus, c'est une partie du 3e corps, avec un général brillant.
Essex ne fait pas de thureophores. J'ai donc utilisé des Thorakitai ( à droite) et des Argyraspides équipés à la romaine (à gauche). Dès que je peux, j'arrange ça.
L'éléphant est un Chariot.
The two thureophoroi units are in fact thorakitai and Argyraspides from Essex. The elefant is from Chariot.

1 de moins, 1 de plus.
Ok, my hellenistic army is now flocked and varnished: well, it's a finished project guys! I will test it for the time tomorrow, in real tournament conditions. I had fun painting it.
Voilà, mon armée hellenistique est maintenant officiellement terminée. Elle sera donc jouée dès demain à Clichy.
Il me restait en core quelques unités à terminer de baser. Mais je ne peux les montrer pour le moment, à cause des espions ^^ demain c'est promis, vous verrez la fin de l'armée.
Et comme un projet est terminé, il est temps de passer à un autre: ma compagnie anglaise pour Bliktzkrieg. J'ai 2 semaines pour la peindre...
En attendant, j'ai sous-couché les 3 dernières unités de cavalerie prussienne.
One project down, a new one's up: I have two weeks to paint a british company for Bliztkrieg rules system (another French one): about 36 figs plus maybe some vehicules. Yeppeeeeee! Anyway. I've also undercoated 3 units of prussian cavalry.

En avant toute!
I can see the light! The end is so near I can feel it! A simple look at the figometre and you get the answer:
My hellenistic army is almost completed! All the units are now painted. And I have about one week to base/flock the rest. Yep! A good thing done.
Pour ceux qui lisent l'anglais, vous avez compris. Pour les autres, petit cours de rattrapage rapide: je viens de terminer la peinture de mon armée hellénistique pour le tournoi de Clichy le week-end prochain! Il ne me reste plus que 6 plaquettes à floquer et ce sera bon!
Voici le résultat en 15mm:
En utilisant les combinaisons de boucliers et de tenue, j'obtiens des phalangites tous différents.
By combining the shield patterns and the armor colours, every pikemen is different from the others!
Et comme vous êtes curieux, vous vous êtes aperçus que le figomètre avait également bougé pour l'armée prussienne. Et vous n'avez pas tort!
And the figometre went also in the good way for the Prussian army:
2 unités de mousquetaires, une de hussards et 3 généraux.
2 musketeers units, 1 hussars and 3 generals.
Ca aide d'avoir fait de l'insomnie [;)]
To be insomniac can be helpful, sometimes...

I'm still finishing basing my hellenistic army for the next week-end tournament. Today, 4 more infantry units are ready to go to war: the mighty phalanxes.
Le soclage de mon armée hellénistique avance toujours. aujourd'hui, 4 unités de phalanges.
Ce sont des figurines Essex. Those are Essex miniatures: seleucid and argyraspids pikemen.

Ca porte loin?
Yes! I'm seeing the end of my first objective, an hellenistic army for the Clichy tournament. I have finished the camps, two generals, a cavalry unit and a medium infantry.
Rhaaaa! Je commence à voir le bout de mon armée hellénistique. Je viens tout juste de terminer mes bagages, 2 généraux, une cavalerie moyenne et des fantassins moyens pour armée ADG pour Clichy. Chui top content.

Ca c'est de la pub ou je ne m'y connais pas
Ca y est! Hier après-midi j'ai trouvé de l'inspiration pour mes boucliers, et j'ai appliqué le tout sur deux nouvelles unités de mon armée Tang:
I finally had an idea for the shields of my Tang infantry:
Alors les petits amis, pourquoi je parle de pub? Pour la simple et bonne raison que ce qu'il y a écrit sur les boucliers signifie: Tang en chinois (mais la dynastie, hein, pas les frères, et encore moins la boisson). Je me garde la première mauvaise réponse pour un autre truc ^^.
On the shields you can see the chinese ideogramms for about the Tang dynasty.
