[Blitzkrieg] Battle for Cotentin
The 1944 Normandy Campaign is still going on, this time one the American sector.
Voici la suite de la campagne Normandie.
While the English army was badly beaten near Villers-Bocage, The American troops from the 9th ID and the 70th Tank Battalion had to break through the Cotentin Peninsula to cut the German in Cherbourg off the rest of the German army.
Pendant que les Anglais se faisaient étriller du côté de Villers-Bocage, les Américains de la 9e division d'infanterie, appuyés par des chars du 70th tank battalion, avaient pour mission de couper la route du Cotentin. Face à eux, quelques Landser de la 295e division.
The advance will be difficult, because of the bocage. So the US troops decide to move methodically, trying to maximise the firepower and the infantry-tank cooperation; the aerial support will stay in reserve, just in case of trouble.
La progression va être difficile, car le bocage est très dense, et il faut aller le plus vite possible. Objectif: couper le Cotentin. Les Américains décident donc d'avancer le plus méthodiquement possible, en maximisant la puissance de feu et la coopération entre les chars et l'infanterie; l'aviation est disponible, mais restera en réserve tant que les troupes allemandes ne seront pas démasquées.
The units advance, but the stress level is going up: where is f*** Jerry?
Les troupes avancent, mais le stress ne fait qu'augmenter... Où sont ces foutus allemands!
Still no shooting, and the first houses from Saint Maurice en Cotentin can be seen. Maybe there are no Germans...
L'avancée est de plus en plus pénible. Toujours aucun tir... A croire que les Allemands se sont enfuis la queue entre les jambes... Déjà les premières habitations de Saint Maurice en Cotentin sont visibles... Toujours rien... Finalement, quelques GI se détendent, et relâchent leur vigilance...
Alas! Suddenly, a trail of smoke, followed by an explsion... Panzerfaust! Too late. A sherman is burning up...
C'est à ce moment qu'une ligne de fumée est aperçue, suivie d'une explosion... Panzerfaust! A couvert! Trop tard. Déjà un sherman flambe.
The German trap is finally revealed: a well hidden Stug begins its hunt...
Le piège allemand se dévoile. Un Stug, très bien camouflé, se met en chasse et commence à tirer...
The tanks exchange a lot of shooting, and the Americans prevail... The german Stug explodes, and the German infantry can't stand the US firepower...
Les échanges de tirs sont furieux. Les Allemands ne peuvent opposer que quelques sections face à deux compagnies américaines. Le Stug est lui-même terrassé par une salve d'obus de 75mm.
The US infantry seem unstoppable: they're clearing every house after another, every hedge after another...
Rien ne semble pouvoir arrêter l'avancée US, qui nettoie systématiquement maisons et haies...
So... Everything seemed to be Ok for the Americans, but once again, fate striked! New shooting from the flank: another German company, had moved, undetected, and started pouring fire towards the US troops.
Tout semblait donc se dérouler pour le mieux pour les Américains. Soudain, de nouvelles rafales se font entendre... des soldats US tombent... Une nouvelle compagnie allemande est sur les lieux du combat! Non repérée par les troupes alliées, elle a pu progresser à couvert et tombe par surprise sur les flancs américains...
Now, this is a critical moment, because the Americans may be outflanked AND cut of their line of supply...
La menace est réelle, car les Américains sont maintenant en passe de se faire complètement tourner et isoler. C'est la fameuse attaque "en tenaille"...
The P-47 engage the German troops, but with very limited success...
Les P-47 se mettent aussi de la partie, mais leurs efforts sont bien peu récompensés...
In the end, we can call it a draw: although the peninsula is cut, the American troops are in bad shape, stretched along a very thin line of defense...
Au total, le bilan est plus que mitigé: les Américains ont envoyé une compagnie bloquer l'attaque allemande,
Et ils n'ont donc plus réellement les moyens de consolider la percée... La suite des affrontements risque donc d'être très mouvementée...

[Blitzkrieg] Deadly Villers...
We played the second turn of the Normandy campaign. The first scenario was located near... Villers-Bocage.
Nous avons joué le deuxième tour de la campagne Normandie. Deux tables ont été préparées pour l'occasion. Aujourd'hui, nous allons revenir sur une bataille des plus célèbres... Villers-Bocage.
Even though the landings weren't as effective as planned, the British troops were strong enough to launch an attack: the 7th armored, the 50th infantry division and elements from the 79th brigade were ordered to attack in the West of Caen... At first, everything seemed to go according to the plan,and the tanks arrived in the village.
Même si le débarquement ne s'était pas déroulé comme prévu, les troupes anglaises se renforçaient rapidement. Le 11 juin, Monty donna l'ordre aux éléments de la 7th armored, à la 50th infantry division et la 79th armored brigade, de percer pour déborder Caen par l'Ouest. Tout se passa bien, au début, et les premiers éléments blindés arrivent en vue du village... Rien à signaler...
... A bit too quiet...

a firefly is destroyed by a pak40... the Panzer-Lehr is already deployed...
L'explosion d'un firefly jette la confusion dans les rangs anglais... Les tankistes, alertés, repèrent un canon antichar de 75mm... Les informations étaient donc vraies... La Panzer-Lehr est déjà déployée...
Achtung! Englishe Panzern!
The tanks don't wait for the infantry and advance around the village, unaware of the Panzerfasuts waiting for them. A Cromwell is immobilized...
The infantry dismount and begin it's methodical advance, clearing each house after another...
Sans attendre l'infanterie, les chars restants poursuivent leur avance... Pour découvrir avec horreur que le village lui aussi est occupé... Des Panzerfaust sont tirés, et un Cromwell est immobilisé...
L'infanterie finit par arriver dans ses Half-tracks, démonte, et commence à nettoyer méthodiquement le village, les unités se couvrant mutuellement.
But, to the horror for the British, Tigers appear; amongst them, the dreaded Wittmann. So they call for their aerial support, but the German Flak is vigilant, and shoots down a typhoon.
Comble de l'horreur... Un bruit se fait entendre... Tigers!!!!! Et à voir le résultat... ce sont des as qui pilotent ces engins... En effet, parmi les 3 tigres qui apparaissent, l'un d'entre eux est conduit par... Wittmann himself.
Les Anglais, encore confiants, font appel à leur soutien aérien... Les Typhoon sont les maîtres des airs... Aussi, lorsqu'ils choisissent leur proie, peu de chances qu'elle leur réchappe... sauf si la DCA veille... et un typhoon est rapidement abattu.
Meanwhile, the infantry tries to advance in the village, and the tigers are still on the hunt. Fortunately for the British, one 88 gun broked down, due to a defective shell...
Pendant ce temps, c'est une course contre la montre entre l'infanterie anglaise qui nettoie le village, et lse tigres qui se mettent en chasse... Qui tiendra le village en premier?
the fighting is severe, and bloody, but the German infantry fight to the death destroying another tank before succombing to the assault
Les combats sont acharnés et sanglants: les Anglais avancent méthodiquement: tirs de soutien de mitrailleuses, puis assaut sur les Allemands cloués... Très efficace, même si, avant de se faire écharper, une section allemande a le temps d'immobiliser un nouveau cromwell au panzerfaust...
Les Typhoon, de leur côté, sont systématiquement repoussés par les tirs de la DCA, et ne peuvent donc empêcher la curée: les tigres allument les chars anglais les uns après les autres. Seul lueur d'espoir, un tankiste allemand, trop heureux de sa journée, enraye son canon (c'est malin)...
The British began to doubt in their possible success when they see reinforcements coming... that's enough! The british half-tracks decide to fall back, leaving their infantry behind (are you crazy?)
Bref, les Anglais décident de se replier, surtout que face à eux arrivent de nouveaux renforts allemands, des Pz IV et des panzergrenadiers. C'en est trop, et les half-tracks décident de partir en 4e vitesse, abandonnant leur infanterie. Peine perdue, ils se font allumer les uns après les autres...
Although British reinforcements were on their way, Monty decided to call of the offensive. The Germans are now well deployed. there is no way to break the german lines... for now.
Bref, alors que les renforts anglais arrivaient pourtant, Monty reconnaît sa défaite et son incapacité à percer. Les allemands sont donc bien retranchés dans le secteur.
Fait plus grave, la 7th armored, à cause de cette défaite et de l'abandon de son infanterie d'accompagnement (le Queen's royal regiment), devient hésitante...

239th "heavy" troopers
If the EPEC security isn't enough to protect the colonists, there is a solution: the troopers from the 239th infantry division:

It seems the beta-3 colony is a quiet place. Sometimes, the troopers have to fight off a raider's attack, once in a while. Otherwise, it's very quiet.....
Bon, il faut bien avouer que c'est une affectation plutôt pépère, avec seulement, de temps en temps, une attaque de raiders à repousser.

Security please!
The archeological expedition is gone for a short trip. It's now time to learn a bit more about the security in the new planet.
The first level of security is represented by the EPEC security teams. EPEC means Extra-Planetary Expeditions and Colonization.
They were a red uniform. Oh they're not that dangerous, but it's enough for most of the cases...
Le premier échelon de sécurité sur la planète est assurée par les équipes de sécurité de l'EPEC, qui signifie Etra-Planetary Expeditions and Colonization. ils sont aisément reconnaissables à leurs uniformes rouges. Ils ne sont pas bien méchants, mais ils sont largement suffisants.

European archeological expedition
Near the Beta-3 colony, something out of the ordinary was found. some say it's from alien origin. So, the European Federation has sent a team of eminent archeologists to try to find out, before the Pan-American Union sends a team.
Des rapports ont mentionnés la découverte d'un lieu pour le moins extraodinaire, proche de la colonie Beta-3. A priori, ce serait d'origine alien. La fédération européenne a aussitôt envoyé une équipe de spécialistes, avant que l'Union Pan-Américaine n'en fasse autant.

[WIP] Beta-3 Colony
Like I said yesterday, i'm onto a new project. As the title suggests, it will be about sci-fi skirmish. I have the minis, but I need buildings. So, I ordered sci-fi bits from Ground zero games, plus things from my trash can. I soon will be a master chief in recycling. Here is what I've done, for now.

J'ai peut-être plein de figs Ground Zero games, mais il me faut des batiments. donc, en regardant ce que j'ai dans ma poubelle (vive le recyclage), plus quelques fittings de chez GZG, j'ai commencé à exercer mes talents d'architecte. [WIP] The last of the Prussians
At last, the painting phase is finished, with the last 2 musketeer units:
So, to finish this commission, I just have to base the units, and voila! I should finish them tomorrow, and deliver the army friday night. the root beer will flow! Yay!
Bon, l'armée prussienne est pratiquement terminée. Les deux dernières unités sont peintes, et j'en aiprofité pour commencer le soclage. Si je continue ainsi, demain, tout est terminé, et je ferai la livraison vendredi soir.

[AAR] Bloody D-Day
Last week we started our Normandy campaign, with a grand opening: a landing AND a para fight. The scenarios were 1/ Gold Beach , Jig sector, and the battle around Ste-Marie du Mont.
Pour inaugurer la campagne Normandie, nous avons joué deux scénarios: Gold Beach, et les combats autour de Ste Marie du Mont.
Let's start with the landing. After the preleminary bombardment, the "german" garrison, comprised of 2 georgian companies, were pinned down. The first landing approched, with 2 british rifles companies from the 251st brigade, and a support from the Royal Engineers, whose task was to clear a way through the only road from the beach. Easy task? Well, the beach wad mined, and 3 Mg bunkers were controlling the strand, plus a pak 38 bunker and a pak 40, in enfilade, near the sanatorium in le Hamel.
La plage est très bien défendue, avec des bunkers antichar et MG qui la prennent en enfilade. Le bombardement naval ne fut pas très efficace, et les Géorgiens, en garnison, ont rapidement repris leurs esprits, hélas...
The current was strong and the british units didn't land at their expected point. the Georgian reacted quickly, too quickly for the british's taste, and the first casualties layed on the beach. Rapidly, the troops were poinned down, trying to protect themselves against the seawall.
The following wave of troops added some tank support from the 79th brigade, and the Roayl marines commandos, but the fire coming from the bunkers took their toll, and the tanks were lighted up very rapidly. To add to this mess, heavy shells coming from inland batteries started to fall over the crowded beach...
Yes, it was hell...
Le courant trop fort a déporté les unités de la première vague: les Royal engineers sont trop loin de leur objectif, et les compagnies de rifles débarquent devant les bunkers... un massacre en perspective...
But the men were brave, and under heavy fire, they started to adapt their actions: the commandos moved to destroy the bunkers, under cover from the rifles, who were taking most of the shooting. Meanwhile, more tanks were landing, destroyed one by one from the deadly pak40 bunker...
Fortunately, some Typhoons were circling, and tried to confuse the ennemy infantry...
As the hours passed, the British moved slowly, clearing each obstacle after another... But at what cost? The sherman crab were burning, detroyed by the At guns covering the inland way, in their trench... 2 companies were destroyed...
Mais c'était sans compter sur le courage et le flegme anglais... Les chars et les commandos,débarqués dans les vagues suivantes, malgré les pertes, commencent à s'adapter et décident de s'attaquer aux bunkers. Le pak 40, en enfilade sur la plage, prélève toutefois un très lourd tribut. Les chars flambent les uns après les autres...
and then... german reinforcements from Kampfgruppe Meyer arrived, with two Stugs and a company...
Was it the end? No! the commandos, after a hard beating, destroyed at last the bunkers, and started to clear the village of le Hamel, followed by more tanks and wasps, whose flame-thrower proved useful against entrenched men... The newly landed sherman and firefly started a tank fight against the Stugs, and destroyed them... When the day was over, the beach was secured, troops were pouring through the openings... But the fight wasn't over. The Georgian weren't too beaten and could continue the fight... So, a bloody draw for this landing. the fight for Caen and Bayeux will be hard.
Moment grave: des renforts allemands du kampfgruppe Meyer arrivent et ajoutent au massacre. La plage est embouteillée, et des obus tirés depuis l'intérieur des terres déciment les compagnies... Deux d'entre elles sont mises au tapis. Les commandos, malgré les pertes continuent leur combat, et finissent par détruire les bunkers, ouvrant la voie aux chars, avant de commencer à nettoyer le village du Hamel.
La journée tire à sa fin quand la plage est enfin quittée. Les wasp et leurs lance-flamme se révèlent utiles pour nettoyer les premières tranchées... Bref, en fin de journée la plage est dégagée, mais les combats continuent... La route de Caen est loin d'être ouverte...
The second table was located in the sector of Ste-Marie du Mont, in the dropzone of the 101st, near Utah Beach.
Von der Heydte, commanding the 6th Fallshirmjäger, was determined to destroy the American paratroopers before the troops from the beach arrived... Hard task. He had 2 companies, plus a Stug and a marder... and a company of Osttruppen... As usual, the german attacked hard and fast. the Osttruppen were left behind, with some panzerfausten, to try to slow down the incoming Americans, while the Fallshirmjäger advanced...
Von der Heydte, du haut du clocher de Ste-Marie du Mont, vit la gigantesque armada alliée se diriger vers le plages... Ce ne sont plus de simples paras qu'il faut éliminer, mais faire face à une invasion... Qu'a-t-il à disposition? 2 compagnies de Fallshirmjäger, 1 Stug, 1 Marder et quelques Osttruppen... C'est bien peu, mais en agissant vite,il avait une chance de liquider la menace para avant de se retourner vers les troupes débarquant.
Il ne perdit pas de temps, et laissa les Osttruppen en arrière, pour ralentir les troupes de la plage, tandis que ses troupes attaqueraient concentrées les pauvres paras US éparpillés...
The poor 101 was scattered, and could do nothing against such a powerful attack... But, as the sky cleared, the mighty Razorbacks started to drop loads of rockets and 12.7mm bullets over the German... the marder exploded like a water balloon, and the Stug was immobilized. Halas, it wasn't enough to slow down the german advance... and many paratroopers were slaughtered, despite real acts of bravery...
Ce fut un massacre. Malgré leur courage, les Américains ne purent stopper la furor Gothicus, et ils furent tués ou capturés les uns après les autres, après de rudes combats... Heureusement pour eux, le ciel, remplis de P-47, était une vraie menace. Le Marder explosa, et le Stug fut immobilisé, présentant un flanc aux shermans arrivant enfin, mais trop tard, de la plage.
As the day went on, reinforcements came in: shermans and mecanized infantry, which rushed up to assist the remnants of the 101. Too late...
They tried to take the road to Carentan, but Panzerfaust fire destroyed a sherman... It was a minor german victory, but, if the scenario had a few more turns, it would have ended in an American victory, because the Germans didn't have anymore At support...
Les troupes US tentèrent de prendre la direction de Carentan, mais les Osttruppen veillaient,et détruisirent le sherman de tête.
Bref, courte victoire allemande, mais si le scénario avait duré plus longtemps, les Américains auraient gagné, car les Allemands n'avaient plus de moyens antichar... La campagne s'annonce rude pour les Alliés.
It's a long way to Tipperary Carentan...

[WIP] D-Day, H minus 3
Ok, my troops are ready to land tonight! I've just finished flocking the bases, and the game start at 8pm. they will fight for Gold Beach, in the Jig sector, with the support of the 47th Royal Marines commando! Yay! They should fight against poor Georgians. Ah, an easy target... I hope so... We will play with Blitzkrieg, a french set of rules, quite similar to Squad Leader. I'll post the After Action Report soon, I promise.
Dans 3 heures, toutes ces troupes vont débarquer... A Gold Beach, secteur Jig, avec l'aide du 47e Royal Marines commando. Ils devraient théoriquement affronter des Géorgiens en garnison sur l'Atlantik wall... Une promenade de santé, quoi... Quoique...
En tout cas, il devrait y avoir 8 joueurs autour de la table... Ca va chauffer! Et bien sûr, vous aurez droit à un beau compte-rendu, sur votre règle préférée ^^

[WIP] D-Day -2
Friday night, I will officially launch a Normandy campaign in my club. The first big scenario is... a landing, on the British side. I already have a company and tanks, but I needed an other one. Well, the task is almost done: the paintig phase is over for my infantry, and I just need to add some detailing (maybe some weathering too if I have the time to do it) to my "heavy" units.
18 infantry bases (including the supports). Now, everything they need is a coat of varnish and some flocking...
Et voilà. A deux jours du gros scénario Blitzkrieg d'introduction à ma campagne Normandie, ma compagnie anglaise est terminée. Il ne me reste plus qu' à la vernir et rajouter le flocage.
Et mes 2 brenn carrier et mes 2 sherman DD sont peints eux aussi; il ne reste plus que quelques détails à faire, et peut-être, si j'ai le temps, un peu de weathering.
Au fait: ENCORE UN PROJET TERMINE!!!!!
Je suis trop fort. Il ne me reste plus que l'armée prussienne. Je vais donc pouvoir en commencer un autre...
